fantastic dinosaur discoveries is the fossil of their eggs. They can show us
all dinosaurs laid eggs as most today reptiles do. The dinosaur embryo is
very similar to the real ones which were much more elongated than birds
eggs. The surface shell was rough and cracked. Try to excavate carefully
then you will find inside the beautifully simulated dinosaur embryo.
Children love to learn about dinosaurs. Here are some fun dinosaur facts
about dinosaur eggs and embroyos:
Dinosaur eggs are eggs laid by dinosaurs. As reptiles, dinosaurs were
presumed to have laid eggs from the 1820s on, when their first
scientifically documented remains were being described in England. In 1859,
the first scientifically documented dinosaur egg fossils were discovered in
France by Jean-Jacques Poech, although they were mistaken for giant bird
eggs. The first scientifically recognized dinosaur egg fossils were
discovered in 1923 by an American Museum of Natural History crew in
Mongolia. Since then many new nesting sites have been found all over the
world and a system of classification based on the structure of eggshell was
developed in China before gradually diffusing into the West. Dinosaur
eggshell can be studied in thin section and viewed under a microscope. The
interior of a dinosaur egg can be studied using CAT scans or by gradually
dissolving away the shell with acid. Sometimes the egg preserves the remains
of the developing embryo inside. The oldest known dinosaur eggs and embryos
are from Massospondylus, which lived during the Early Jurassic, about 190
million years ago.
Dinosaurs hatched from eggs laid by females. The eggs were round or
elongated and had hard, brittle shells. Internally, these eggs were similar
to those of reptiles, birds and primitive mammals; they contained a membrane
(called the amnion) that kept the embryo moist. Some dinosaurs cared for
their eggs, others simply laid them and then abandoned them.
RECENT FINDS
About 10 large dinosaur eggs (plus 3 egg impressions) were found 1999 in
southwestern France (near Albas, in the foothills of the Pyrenee Mountains).
No bone fossils were found. The eggs had been buried in two layers in the
sand. No one knows what type of dinosaur the eggs were.
Fossils of dinosaurs' burrows and nests can reveal a lot about their
behavior. Nests vary from simple pits dug into the earth or sand to more
complicated nests constructed with mud rims. They may appear in large groups
or all alone. The nests and the clutches of eggs reveal information about
the dinosaur's nurturing behavior.
If you are feeling adventurous you can make your own dinosaur fizzy dirt
dough for your kids to play with their dinosaurs. It’s mold-able so it’s
great to add a few leaves into the tub for them to make dinosaur nests too!
You will need one large box of baking soda and one whole container of black
washable watercolor. Add the desired amount of baking soda to a sensory bin
or container. Use one large 16 ounce box, and that makes enough dirt dough
to cover the bottom of our sensory bin. Add several drops of black
watercolors or food coloring, and then slowly add water (about 1-3 cups of
water) and mix. Slowly add more water until the desired consistency is
reached. If you add too much water just add more baking soda. For ultimate
fun give kids squirt bottles of vinegar to make fizzing mud science!
Another great thing about dirt dough is after kids have played with it for a
few days you can use it to make hatching dinosaur eggs. You can store dirt
dough in an air tight container or zip lock bag for several days. If it
starts to dry out simply add a bit more water. Dinosaur Toys Superstore usually keeps our dirt
dough for a few days and then make dinosaur eggs with it. Place a little
dinosaur in the middle of each egg. Hide them in the garden for the kids to
find!
Surprise your kids with dinosaur eggs for dinner or a prehistoric snack!
These are easy to make and you will be surprised how fast they gobble them
up! Makes 6 servings and preparation time is 35 minutes.
